DIY Dust Spray to the Rescue!

Hey friend!

So since beginning my minimal, non-toxic lifestyle I had pretty much given up dusting sprays, polish etc. in lieu of reusable felt or microfiber dusters.

But I did have one small cleaning product vice that remained. I had a tiny love affair with a certain commercial - multi-surface cleaning spray that I was reluctant to part ways with.

After a home renovation by my darling husband this past summer, I realized that I was in desperate need of cleaning my office that consists of multiple surfaces. The dust from drywall demolition and resurfacing had spread everywhere and my work surfaces were covered in not just regular Arizona dust, but drywall dust as well. Plain ‘ol dusters were not going to cut it so I went to the cabinet for my trusty multi-surface cleaner and lo and behold it was missing!

I do happen to have a child who also has a cleaning supply love affair like mom and since it had been awhile since I used it someone else must have found it and depleted my supply. (Whyyyy?)

I was annoyed, not in the mood to go to the store, and as always a little guilt ridden at the thought of purchasing another can knowing it’s not the healthiest option so I decided to once again search the internet for a suitable DIY replacement. Now to be honest, the concoctions I’ve tried in the past I have not been impressed with. I’ve used the lemon juice and oil method - not a fan, vinegar blends are not my favorite so I sifted and sifted through Pinterest until I happened to stumble on a recipe that intrigued me. Using my past experience I modified it a bit to come up with this recipe using things I already had in the house. I thought what the heck, I’ll make a small batch and if I don’t love it I’ll once again buy a can of the toxic stuff, use it sparingly and hide this one better from our resident spray thief. No harm, no foul.

We were a match made in heaven!

My friend I was so impressed with this recipe I wound up going all over the house testing it on every surface, giggling like a crazy woman as it beautifully cleaned every single surface I tried it on - even my glass shelves with no streaks!

It’s official - we are over!

I’ve officially broken up with the canned commercial guy and head over heels with my own DIY blend! Best part, since I had everything in my home it cost me nothing and when I do need to restock supplies each batch will cost me pennies!

But to be sure before I shared I have faithfully used this blend for a few months and we are still a thing! I hope you give it a try and love it as much as me! Happy dusting!

DIY Dusting / Multi Surface Spray

1 cup distilled water

2 T castile soap (I used the eucalyptus scent)

1/3 cup vodka or rubbing alcohol

15 drops each doTERRA Balance & lavender essential oils (or 30 drops of your favs)

Mix well and store in a spray bottle.

My bottle is plastic so I was careful not to use citrus essential oils that will deteriorate the container and leech plastics into my spray. If you want to use citrus oils I suggest using a glass spray bottle instead.

Why did I choose these oils?

doTERRA Balance has an airy, fresh, woody, and tranquil aroma that inspires feel good emotions. As a cleaning supply junkie I like things to smell good when I clean them and Balance is something I had on hand. The addition of lavender was strategic for cleansing properties (antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal), fresh scent and a great combo with balance.

So there it is! Finally a winner in the DIY dusting spray arena!
