How to Make Your Own Anointing Oil

It is very easy to make your own anointing oil at home and actually I prefer that over buying it from someone else. The best part about making your own anointing oil is that there is no prescribed way to do it and no way you can mess it up! As a matter of fact you can make anointing oil with just plain cooking oil from your kitchen but if you are anything like me you want to use your God given creativity and make something really special. If that resonates with you here’s how you can do the same.

What You Will Need

For the base of your anointing oil you can choose any kind of oil you have on hand. To remain closest to what would be used Biblically olive oil is probably the best choice, but you can also use fractionated coconut oil or any other kind of kitchen oil you have.

For the container it’s best to use glass and preferably amber to preserve the integrity of the essential oils. The type of container is going to be your preference for ease of use and transportation. Some suggestions are 2oz dropper bottle, 10ml roller bottle, or 5ml dropper or orifice topped bottle. I have found though that the dropper or roller are the best if you are using olive oil because the orifice hole is small and olive oil can be hard to move through it.

Your Choice of Essential Oils

There is no exact recipe for anointing oil on this side of the cross. As a matter of fact, in the Old Testament there is a recipe for the Holy Anointing Oil used in the temple in Exodus 30. However, in verse 32 & 33 it does specify not to copy that recipe. So I like to include Frankincense in mine which was a gift given to Jesus when He was young and deviates it from the one we are instructed not to copy. Typically I use what I have on hand when I make my anointing oil. Sometimes it’s just frankincense but if I have myrrh I will add that also and other spices found in the Bible to make it extra special.

Other spices with Biblical reference and are available as essential oils are cassia, cinnamon, spikenard (lavender is similar and can be substituted), sandalwood (sometimes referred to in the Bible as aloes), sweet cane (known today as lemongrass), and cypress.

Your anointing oil can be made with any blend of the oils I listed or that you have as long as the aroma draws your attention to Jesus. There is no exact amount to use either and this is where your creativity comes in. The important thing when you mix it up is that you use enough essential oil that you can smell them.

Instructions

Start with filling the container you chose to hold the oil with whatever base oil you are using. Only fill it to the neck (or arch) or less of the bottle so it doesn’t overflow when you add your oils and dropper or lid. Then add the oils you want to add to it until you have a blend you are pleased with. You can fill to the neck when you are finished adding your essential oils.

Typically in a roller bottle you will add anywhere from 10-15 drops total of oils.

In a 2 oz dropper bottle you may want to add 20-30 total drops of essential oil.

In the event you want some recipes to start with I’ve added some suggestions below. The point is to make a blend you love using, so feel free to be creative!

Consecrating Your Anointing Oil

Until the oil is blessed it is just like any other essential oil blend you would make, but once you pray over it then it will be consecrated. Once it’s set apart for spiritual use you will want to label it and use it only for the purpose it’s intended.

Prayer of Consecration:

Father, in the name of Jesus I consecrate this anointing oil as holy unto you. The scourging of Jesus’s body paid the price for our healing and restoration under the New Covenant. By the blood of Jesus and His willing sacrifice we are healed and delivered from all the power of the enemy and every curse that was in effect before the cross. Let this oil be a symbol of Jesus’s finished work every time it is applied. As the sick are anointed let it speak of your healing power. As the oppressed are anointed let it speak of your delivering power. Let it be a reminder to all of the victory Jesus won at Calvary every time it is applied. I ask this in the mighty, matchless name of Jesus. Amen!

Using Your Anointing Oil

You can use your anointing oil at home in your prayer closet, praying for friends or family members, bring it to your Bible study or keep it in your church bag so you always have it on hand when the need arises. To use it, apply it to the forehead or area of concern. You can anoint in the name of Jesus or The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit before you pray.

* Note: since there is a carrier oil in this blend it is not suitable for diffusing. Use it only on the body for prayer purposes.

Anointing oil also makes a very thoughtful and precious gift for someone. Do use it and use it often!

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
— James 5:14
